Cheese & Upper Egypt specialities
Basisa — 500 g
65 EGP / 500g pack
Basisa is an old Upper Egyptian food: wheat or barley, roasted and ground, which you mix at home with black honey, honey, samna or milk until it becomes a paste or a thick drink. It tastes toasted, smells strongly of it, and is the kind of breakfast that carries you through the day. Every household makes it its own way: some mix it with samna and black honey and roll it into small balls, some loosen it with milk or warm water and drink it, some add nuts or sugar. It also works stirred into yoghurt. Keep it in a sealed jar in a dry place away from sun and humidity, with a dry spoon each time. The black honey and baladi samna it is mixed with are stocked here too.
